David Grubb The Mind and Dying of Mr Punch PUNCH ShowsOff Screaming from his boots Punch swirls with the stick and attacks the man. The crowd screams back. Punch hits out with everything he has and strikes the human head until the blood comes out. The crowd sees the blood. Punch disappears, his face rammed into the dark of the box. The thing called a wife takes over and laughter rings. The policeman and the judge behave like clowns. The dark of the box whistles. Punch cannot hear. He wraps his face in a piece of the dark and the huge doubt bleeds. PUNCH Disappears The mirror fails again: There has to be more than images. Punch moves his right arm and sees the right arm raised. This is not enough. There have to be miracles somewhere. Punch winks his left eye and sees the left eye wink back. He moves his mind slightly ; just so. He has never doubted so much before. Punch rushes at the mirror and keeps on going. Escape. Looking back, he raises the right arm again ; and nothing happens. This must be death. He grins.
