Week 1 - Traditional - Ink

Artists I've taken inspiration from: (Aubrey Beardsley, Bob Sheriffs, Charles Dana Gibson,  John Minton, Ralph Steadman, William Heath Robinson)
The use of line and block colours to create tone and form these illustrators use in their work was something I had not seen a lot of before and I wanted to experiment in my pieces this week. Learn how to create the illusion of shadow, form and tone without shading, just using line or shapes of block colour.
Some of these illustrator's pieces do use shading/ hatching, with fine liners and drawing pens instead of brushes. I also wanted to experiment with this as well, different hatching techniques, lighter and darker tones.
Task 1 - Still Life drawing
Practicing mark making using different materials
Picture
Still life 1: (dip pen for lines and brushes for solid black)
Still life 2: (brushes)
Still life 3: (fine liners)
Task 2 - Self portraits
Self portrait1: (dip pen and brushes), Self portrait 2: ( fine liner and dip pen)
Self portrait 3: (fine liners), Self portrait 4: (fine liners)
Self portrait 5: (brushes)
(Smudges across eyes removed on Adobe Photoshop)
Task 3 - Drawing a room in your house
Reflecting on the week:
Working with ink was quite new to me and some pieces went better than others, for the process and outcome. I felt most comfortable using a brush and least comfortable with a fine liner. However, all three had their advantages and disadvantages. Fine liners dry very quickly and are difficult to smudge unlike brushes and dip pens, I often forgot the ink took a while to dry and put my hand in it causing smudges.
The two artists I took most from this week are Bob Sheriffs and Charles Dana Gibson. Sheriffs' line work and ability to create form without tone is something I wanted to try and replicate in my pieces. Gibson's ability to create tone using hatching is also something I wants to practice using dip pens and fine liners. Some of my final outcomes show these more than others, not all were successful. I think that still life 3 shows Charles Dana Gibson off best and uses the best hatching techniques. Self portrait 5 shows Bob Sheriff and the line work creating form off best.
Drawing from life is something I need a lot of practice in and understanding of perspective too but generally my drawing and painting techniques this week weren't too bad and I would definitely be up for using ink again.
